I have a deep passion for unraveling the mysteries of organometallic catalytic reactions using mass spectrometry. My academic journey is dedicated to exploring the intricate mechanisms behind these reactions and developing Python-based tools to enhance analysis and optimization processes. I love talking chemistry, and sharing my passion with anyone who is curious!

Here is a selection of some of my favorite projects that I have led or contributed to over the past few years. I've been fortunate to work and collaborate with many amazing researchers, whose diverse perspectives and expertise have greatly enriched these projects. The projects span a wide range, including mechanistic MS analysis of catalytic reactions, the development of analytical tools, and advancements in AR apps for chemical education.

Teaching and Mentorship
I've had the privilege of mentoring seven undergraduates through their research journeys. I am especially proud that four of the students come from underrepresented groups in STEM. I take great pride in the accomplishments of my mentees, with two receiving recognition for their exceptional research work! Alongside mentoring, I have served as a teaching assistant across a range of courses, from introductory chemistry to advanced inorganic synthesis and spectroscopy. Curious about some feedback? See below!

CHEM 101 - UVic
Ian was very helpful in guiding my understanding of the topic. Not only did his explanations make sense, but he was also patient with me when I still didn't understand a topic. In terms of teaching, he was very relaxed and laid back, but still to the point and serious.
Dr. Dave Berry
Senior Lab Instructor - UVic
I was very impressed with the attention to detail that you paid in preparing your materials outside of class. You always knew which step your students were at, and you were ready to help them move forward.

CHEM 225 - UVic
Ian is by far the best TA I have had for any science class, and I am at the end of my degree. He answered all questions in great detail, no matter how obvious, and ensures nobody is left behind.
Anonynous Student
CHEM 362 - UVic
Ian did extra tutorials on synthetic setups and techniques, which were very helpful. Very knowledgeable and helpful in the lab, in addition to being a very kid person.
Tiago Fisher
Honors Student - UVic
Thank you for being an amazing mentor! I hope you continue to take on studens. Best of luck as you finish your PhD!
